Have you been Rainbow mountains or montañas de Colores in the Andes of Peru? 🌈 Peaking at 17,000 ft above sea level, this mountain of 7 colors (hues of gold, lavender, red, turquoise, and more) is 4,000- 5,000 ft higher than Cusco. The colors originate from the composition of the mountain which include: red clay, mud, and sand. The sand and silt provide key ingredients to form the colors we see today. The colors were formed from numerous years of exposure to erosion and weathering. (The trip). We woke up roughly around 3:30 am to catch our 4:00 am white mini van bus. When they arrived, we met up with two tour members (one a driver, and the other, a guide). Then we set off on our journey on the road (which was approximately 3-4 hour ride). We also stopped midway for a buffet style breakfast with potatoes, eggs, fruits, veggies, beverages, etc. (The ride). BUMPY!! The road had no ledges, side rails, or any piece of metal that would prevent us from falling of the cliff. There were many pot holes that punctured the tire as well. After suffering a concussion, you will arrive at the starting point of the 🌈 Palcoyo Mountains. The starting point is also surrounded by a small village which housed around 200-300 rural herders / farmers (llamas, sheep, and alpacas). (The hike). Being 17,000 ft high above sea level… the hike was arduous. I felt like I could not breathe.
