Overview What is oxygen? Out of the 118 elements in the universe, oxygen is the 3rd most common. There is more oxygen inside your body than any other element, and at least 21% of Earth's atmosphere is made of oxygen. Oxygen is a chemical element with an atomic number of 8 (it has eight protons in its nucleus). Oxygen forms a chemical compound (O2) of two atoms which is a colorless gas at normal temperatures and pressures. We humans, along with many other creatures, need oxygen in the air we breathe to stay alive. Key concept Waves act like an aerator, stirring up the water and increasing its contact with the air. As the water mixes with the air, oxygen from the atmosphere is dissolved into the water. This wave action is one reason why there is typically more dissolved oxygen in the shallow water along a natural shoreline. Uses Common uses of oxygen include production of steel, plastics and textiles, brazing, welding and cutting of steels and other metals, rocket propellant, oxygen therapy, and life support systems in aircraft, submarines, spaceflight and diving. Linked knowledge The Physical Properties of Oxygen are as follows: Color : Colorless. Phase : Gas. Odor : Oxygen is an odorless gas. Taste : A tasteless gas. Conductivity : A poor conductor of heat and electricity. Solubility : Slightly soluble in water, alcohol and some other common liquids. Density : It is denser than air. Types of Oxygen The three types of oxygen systems currently available are: Compressed gas systems. Portable oxygen concentrators (POCs). Liquid oxygen systems.
