Dulcineasdiarycontinued - Another hot day today, it's reached a top of 29 degrees C- still hot but not stinking hot. I made myself got for a swim after lunch at Lane Cove Aquatic Centre for an hour. No hot tub soak today as the hot tub was full of dirty older men and there was not a single female in it, no outside 50 m pool swim as there was a breeze and not hot enough to dry my swimmers and I never use the gym , steam room or sauna, no swim in the heated hyrdo pool either as it was closed for kids swim classes . I Just a play in the warmer kids pool after spending a full hour in the indoor 25 m lane pool. A shower and a change of clothes before heading to one of the larger and unique Woolworths . ( no video on Labe Cove Aquatic Centre as I have uploaded one previously but I have not visited or done a video on this particular Lane Cove Woolworths before and it is a little different to many of the others). I have been meaning to pay a visit this particular much larger underground Woolworths for a while but it's a little off the route from where I live eventhough it is close by . I stopped going to this particular Woolworths because staff were rude but today they were not. With heavy groceries too it is inconvenient as it is an upward walk home or a rather long wait in the evenings for a bus. So why did I shop at this particular Woolworths ? It is cooler being underground for a start and is a much larger A grade supermarket in the chain BUT they are also one of a few supermarkets chosen to trial shopping tablets which dock into shopping trolleys. I was going to try one myself but didn't as I only needed to get a few items ( which ended up being around over $80 worth ie a basket of groceries ended up being equivalent to half a trolley worth of groceries ( I had to carry all my groceries home so if I used a trolley I would keep buying and not be able to carry it all home) I'm also a real cheap skate so won't use the home delivery service or order online to be delivered and didn't even want to pay to unlock the trolley! Yes their trolleys are all locked ! The tablet tech trial has been going for quite a few months now - would not be surprised if it has been 6 months + already. So is it useful practical or just a gimmick? When I arrived & it is late night shopping tonight only 3 or 4 tablets were missing from the display stands and during my 4 - 5 hours at Woolworths ( I lost track of time) I only saw 1 or 2 customers use them. The tablets are rather heavy ( I tried to pick one up) chunky and clunky with a rather thick black curly cable attached to each of them. The tablets click into a docking station fixed to the trolley. To use the tablets you need to be an Everyday Rewards member & scan your card to begin. I was also tempted to ask a couple if I could take a photo of their tablet docked into their shopping trolley & ask them what they thought if using it but I abandoned the idea after seeing it used.I did not want to video the screen of the tablet in case their personal details were displaying on the tablet's screen ( which would be a cyber security concern if customers left their trolleys to find grocery items). Gimmicky? I think so , looks as if customers used it when first launched then almost abandoning the whole new technology concept. It's a long way away before any smaller format Woolworths ie Metro stores will be trialling or adopting anything like the hightech Amazon Go stores in the US which are scan & go - cashless, register less, quicker without queuing as well there is no staff but cameras everywhere watching and scanning your every move. Here at this Woolworths upon leaving there were a few more trolleys & tablets being used but hardly 10%. Customers stll have to go to a self checkout to pay by cash or card or phone with one more step - where & how do they return the tablet? A litte inconvenient isn't it? The trolley has to go with the customer at least to be put back & locked up or to the carpark, even outside of the registers & self service check out but what do they do with the tablets which are picked up inside the self closing security gates in the supermarket after unlocking the trolleys? Do customers accidently take them out with the trolleys especially to the cat park? Do they get manually collected by a staff member at self service and manual registers? Do they get dumped? Do they log off automatically as soon as you scan your Everyday Rewards card again at the registers? So many answered questions such as how easy are they to use? Are they glitchy? Do they actually save you time & money? Do you really need the app to use them? Do they link up to home delivery and to car boot services? How does the shopping list upload or download load work or is there one? Concept is great but I may have to try & come back one day to trial it for myself. I need to be more prepared. I wonder how effective / efficient it is during busy periods at Woolworths & bulk buy # of item limits.
