As Wikipedia explains, this film noir “is the story of a crusading newspaper editor who exposes a gangster’s crimes while also trying to keep the paper from going out of business, and contains a subplot of him trying to reconcile with his ex-wife.” Humphrey Bogart plays Ed Hutcheson, the managing editor of a large metropolitan newspaper called The Day. He’s dealing simultaneously with the possible sale and closure of his beloved broadsheet, the coming nuptials for his former spouse (played by Kim Hunter), and “the murder of a young woman and the involvement of racketeer Tomas Rienzi [Martin Gabel], which could turn out to be a circulation builder that keeps the paper in business or else the last big story it ever covers.” My favorite scene in the picture is the one shown above, when Rienzi calls Hutcheson to threaten him with violence if he publishes an account of his multiple crimes. Hutcheson defies those warnings, telling his pressmen to begin running the latest edition of The Day through the presses. “That noise—what’s that racket?” Rienzi demands to know when he hears the sound of the giant machines in action. “That’s the press, baby!” Hutcheson pronounces with pride. “The press. And there’s nothing you can do about it. Nothing!” Learn more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deadline_%E2....
