Saddam Hussein mural STORYLINE Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison, notorious for its regime of torture and executions, now lies empty, stripped clean by looters who hauled away office furniture, computers, sewing machines and inmates' belongings. Former prisoner Radi Mehdi returned on Thursday to the cells where he was held between 1982 and 1991 for refusing to fight against fellow Shi'ites in the Iran-Iraq war. The 47-year-old says he was tortured and kept in overcrowded, inhumane conditions before he was released during an amnesty shortly after the First Gulf War. He reported witnessing others also tortured, some kept in tiny solitary confinement cells, and hearing fellow inmates' cries of "Allahu Akhbar" (God is Great) each time an execution took place. In the execution ward, the two nooses still dangle from the ceiling. The metal arms that the executioner pulled to yank iron trapdoors from under the feet of the condemned are there, too. Critics of Saddam's regime have told the world of the disappearances, torture and summary executions that awaited anyone suspected of plotting against the Iraqi leader or challenging his policies. Much of that reportedly took place in Abu Ghraib. Former inmates have told of chemical and biological weapons experiments on prisoners and the execution of hundreds in the 1990s as part of a campaign by Saddam's son Qusai (Qusay) to ease crowding. The prison belongs to the Ministry of Social Affairs but was run by Saddam's feared intelligence department. In October, a blanket pardon by Saddam sent home thousands but it was never clear whether political detainees benefited from that amnesty. A group of foreign journalists arrested in Baghdad late last month was held in Abu Ghraib for a week. Newsday's Matt McAllester said he and his colleagues "were aware of the screams of other prisoners, especially at night when they were taken out of their cells". The four slept on concrete floors in 6-by-11-foot (2-by-3.8-meter) cells. Up to 25-thousand prisoners were held in the sprawling compound 20 kilometres (12 miles) west of Baghdad.
