A recent Talking Point survey polling over 1,000 secondary students revealed that 14% reported being bullied in 2024. This figure contrasts with the Ministry of Education's (MOE) official report of 6 bullying incidents for every 1,000 secondary school students during the same year. Why the difference? According to Tan Chen Kee, the education ministry's director of schools, official figures only reflect cases that have been reported. Some cases surface as allegations and may not be recorded in official statistics if teachers or students resolve them on their own, she added. "When there are disciplinary outcomes or proceedings, these would then be recorded and locked in." Tan also acknowledged that the issue of bullying has become a lot more complex, especially with the prevalent use of technology and online spaces. “If you ask me whether the house is burning down, I would say no.
