I was surprised to read in many places how many interpreters were calling for assigning Venezuelan Spanish language interpreters to the trial of former strongman Nicolás Maduro, arguing he would probably use many regional and idiomatic expressions. It became apparent that they are not acquainted with the American legal system, so I decided to make this video to fully describe, step by step, the stages of a criminal proceeding in the U.S. with the objective to show the diminutive part Venezuelan expressions play, and how relevant is to have interpreters who know the substantive and adjective aspects of the trial, regardless of their country of origin.
