What is the UIP (usual interstitial pneumonia) pattern?

Explaining the UIP (usual interstitial pneumonia) pattern of pulmonary fibrosis (lung scarring). UIP is not a diagnosis in itself, but rather a description of either the radiological pattern of scarring, or the appearance of the scarring on a biopsy specimen of the lung. It can be confusing because some letters from clinicians may refer to UIP-pattern fibrosis, probable UIP, indeterminate for UIP or other similar terms. These are not diagnoses in themselves, but rather descriptions which help clinicians define what they are seeing in that particular case. The UIP pattern may be encountered in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF), rheumatoid arthritis associated interstitial lung disease (RA-ILD), asbestosis and potentially other forms of ILD.
