Trusted western historian fact checks the authenticity of westerns for A WORD ON WESTERNS. RIP Veteran Phil Spangenberger (5/11/40 - 9/28/24) legendary fast-draw gun coach and a stickler for authenticity. Were western movies ever accurate? Are things better and more realistically presented today? In this special episode, Phil joins host Rob Word to discuss Hollywood’s portrayal of what really happened. Focusing on the the Civil War in Western films from classics like GONE WITH THE WIND (1939) and THE GENERAL (1926) to modern epics like GLORY (1989), they explore how cinema has shaped our understanding of America’s most pivotal conflict. Phil and Rob discuss the romanticism of the Confederacy in early films, the accuracy of movies like SANTA FE TRAIL and the evolving perspectives on the Civil War, its cause and legacy. Discover how most Westerns have woven Civil War themes into their narratives, the historical figures often depicted, and the impact these portrayals have on audiences. Whether you’re a history buff or a film enthusiast, this episode offers insightful commentary on the intersection of Hollywood and history. From coaching Mel Gibson in the art of gun twirling for MAVERICK (1994) to participating in large-scale Civil War reenactments alongside friends like Bruce Boxleitner and Larry Brady, Phil was active both behind the scenes and in front of audiences. This expanded episode was recorded September 23, 2015, at the Autry Museum and includes a timely appearance of singer/songwriter/actor Will Ryan and the Saguaro Sisters performing a rousing rendition of two traditional songs. Phil Spangenberger’s love of the western genre was unmatchable. He was a much sought after authority, multi-award winning editor for GUNS AND AMMO and TRUE WEST magazines and served on the Golden Boot Awards Executive Committee. A Florida boy like me, we connected early with our shared love of westerns. I couldn’t match his skill as a horseman or shooter, but our passions both seem unstoppable. He has stopped now, but even as he rides with the ghosts of his western heroes, his legacy, humor, joy and long life of contributions will live on and on. He is missed. Rest in Peace, cowboy. #facts #western #filmhistory #awordonwesterns #classicwestern #classicmovies #gonewiththewind #civilwar #errolflynn #philspangengerber #robword #retro #buster #veterans #veteransday #soldier #movies #moviescenes #randolphscott #interview #podcast #truewest #gunsandammo #historian
