Local, provincial and national housing news for the week of Sept 15th. A new Royal LePage finds that many Canadian snowbirds are increasingly worried about owning vacation properties in the US. More than half are thinking of selling in the next year, as well as curtailing any travel plans they've made. The Bank of Canada, at the Wednesday policy meeting, lowered the overnight rate by 25 basis points. It now sits at 2.5%. With inflation mostly under control, job losses of 100,000 over the past 2 months caused the central bank to act, in an attempt to reduce unemployment. In related news mortgage rates are down slightly as well, with a 5 year fixed coming in at 3.79%. The provincial government rewarded KW with 16.7 million dollars for exceeding provincial housing targets. Waterloo beat the mark at 129% with Kitchener hitting 105%, a very impressive figure. Cambridge, unfortunately, received zero dollars this year in spite of receiving money last year. High costs for mid to high rise construction was cited as a concern. Federally, Prime Minister Carney announced a new federal agency mandated to build affordable housing across the nation. Factory homes are p[art of the solution, and builders who use Canadian materials and lumber will receive preferential treatment from the feds. They've kick started the process with 13 billion dollars. You'll find links below for all the things I've mentioned in this video.
