Love it or hate it, it’s now cool to care about things. While music has long been a medium for protests, call to arms, and social activism, it was never rewarded as quickly and as highly as they are today. Sure, it has always hold the power to incite change, but did you get to headline festivals and rack up streaming numbers while you’re at it? That’s not always the case. Not to name names, but I’ve found that sometimes, issues being brought up in certain records are not the ones the musicians have faced themselves. Not unlike the criticism frequently directed at social media activism, the question remains: Can it still be effective without a physical presence? Can you still talk about an issue if you’re not directly affected by it--and additionally, you’re making a profit out of it? For Navicula, though, there’s no front to their revolution. It's been almost 20 strong years of exclaiming their concerns via music. While we are accustomed to the self-alienating and pessimistic--if not nihilistic lyrical content in most grunge songs, they convert rage into thrilling, in-your-face, powerful messages. They don't sing about something because it’s now cool to talk about it. If they sing about something, it's because they genuinely care. From deforestation in “Harimau, Harimau” to the highly corrupt justice system in “Mafia Hukum”, there’s only music and the hard truth. In a way, I would say that they “earned” the rights to bring up the issues mentioned above. This grunge powerhouse has come from a long way before standing where they are today: a long, bumpy way that involves a motorbike expedition through a palm oil killing fields in Borneo, a campaign to support the unmerciful anti-graft agency, collaboration with Indonesian rock legends God Bless, a campaign against Bali land reclamations and an album produced by none other than Alain Johannes, recorded in the iconic Record Plant Studio, Hollywood. They indeed, know their shit and walk their talk. Despite the tragic passing of their bassist Made in 2018, Navicula show no sign of stopping anytime soon. Their latest battle cry, “Dagelan Penipu Rakyat”, was recorded in response to the dubious and potentially problematic RUU Permusikan. While it’s no easy feat to keep the flame alive, their two decades-long career proves that it’s not impossible. Here’s to many more years of doing the right thing. - Zara Z.
