This is a, no commentary, Longplay of The Lawnmower Man for Game Boy. It is also known as Virtual Wars in Japan. The Lawnmower Man is based on the homonym film so story is interesting (not going to explain it here as it's quite lengthy). The developers tried to combine different styles (platforming, driving, shooting) but utterly failed in all. There are some levels with a psuedo-3D perspective which is really formidable for Game Boy standards but execution is pretty bad leading to very linear and boring levels, mediocre controls and poor graphics (look for instance the boss at 6:42). The levels themselves look empty and repetitive leaving a feeling the developers were in rush to finish the game. Replayability is minimal as the game is very linear (no secret levels or extra endings), there is no 2-Player option, and the only reason to replay it is for score. Most of the game takes place in virtual reality that is why the hero fires triangular bullets. During platforming levels you have a meter that can be filled by collecting disks from dead enemies; when the meter is full you can take an extra hit without losing a life. There is also the number of lifes shown (the hearts); keep in mind that up to 8 hearts can be shown on screen even though the game can register more. Finally the current score is also visible. There are (a few) pickups you can collect for extra points, 1UPs or dual weapon damage which are shown in this video. Lastly, there is a terminal in some levels in which you can play a mini-game; wining the game completely fills the meter. The shooting levels do not have any pickups and the only goal is to finish the stage by killing all enemies and avoiding obstacles. The driving level is, by far, the most annoying. The controls and collision mechanics are so bad that is extremely easy to lose control and crash with a simple 'touch' with another car. There is no point destroying all cars since they respawn infinitely. The best way I found is to simply avoid them. Sound is nothing special but ok in general with a variety of tracks. In short, The Lawnmower Man had the potential to be a visually impressive title (it takes place in virtual world after all) but the execution is horrible leading to rush-to-finish graphics, poor gameplay, zero replayability and mediocre sound. I surely don't recommend it, but if you give it a try know that is quite challenging title that becomes even harder due to poor optimization. It took me a few days to master it to do a No death run. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Game is played by me in one go. No save states/cheats have been used. Recorded in bgb 1.5.7. Please note I uploaded it just for fun, no intention to compete anyone.
