I couldn't resist the offer from Tonefloat and ordered 12 items from the label to enhance my collection. Akhet is Dirk Serries, Marc Verhaeghen and Paul van den Berg The tone on "Akhet" is lighter than on most Verhaeghen and Serries releases, but never gets really comfortable HANS & YAN - R.I.P. (LP) The tracks on R.I.P.are a cross-fertilization of analog and digital sounds and give an urgent, but sometimes alienating interpretation to the theme chosen by the duo. The life we (in the eyes of Dagelet and Van Eerd) live is absurd, surprising, bizarre and sometimes cruel, which immediately indicates the diversity between the eight tracks. From the trumpet-borne, rather serene Soundtrack For The Ravaged Actor to the Das Automobil, filled with basic electronics, the gentlemen search for extremes. The addition of texts by the Groningen printer / artist N.H.Werkman, a leading figure within the artist collective De Ploeg, who was shot by the Germans at the end of the Second World War, gives four songs an extra alienating and at the same time extrovert character. The Sleep of Reason On October 9, 2012, in a limited edition of only 200 pieces, the collected work of Dirk Serries and Jon Attwood was published. In addition to three albums, this package contains an exclusive live album with recordings of last year's Tonefloat label night and a CD with a selection of songs chosen from the three long players. 'The Sleep Of Reason' brings the individual aspects of the two musicians together in a new world of stylistic sound sculptures. Slow in design with slowly changing moods, you are immersed in and confronted with the fascinating evolution of this music. The three albums form a continuous, but subtle, process of change. This introduction with six fragments to 'The Sleep Of Reason' sounds heavenly beautiful and those who purchase the entire work can look forward to a unique listening experience. Polar Twins The night, a guitar, an accordion, pencil and paper, a rickety recording device and a nice bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon: Dirk Polak and Mark Ritsema needed nothing more for the songs on this album. Both have a past in patriotic underground groups from the eighties, Mecano and Spasmodique respectively. Not that you hear that much on this album. Polar Twins rather play a mix of chanson and art rock. Somewhere between Bowie, Brel and Nick Cave, but by naming those names you actually lack the originality of Polar Twins night music. There is something typically European about the group, thanks to Dirk's accordion. In the heady waltz Black Sea and the French-speaking Carrousel, this turns out particularly well. Another highlight is the German-speaking Schönhauser Allee, which could easily become a hit with the Eastern neighbors with a little luck. In their own words, they just write love songs, but thanks to their grooved voices, it doesn't get sweet or predictable anywhere. The result is a fine, artisanal plate. Also highly enjoyable outside the small hours. Sad Iron - The Antichrist LP. A limited edition reissue of the long lost second album by a highly rated Dutch Heavy Metal band. 'Sad Iron' was part of the same Heavy Metal scene as Picture, Exciter and Martyr. This reissue on 180-gram vinyl includes liner notes. Fear Falls Burning. On Disorder of Roots Dirk is assisted by Phil Petrocelli (Jesu, Jarboe) and Magnus Lindberg (Cult Of Luna) on drums and Michiel Eikenaar (Nihill, Dodecahedron) behind the microphone. James Plotkin did the mastering. This four-part has again become a sonar of ultrasound vibrations. At first it tickles your ear canals, but after a few minutes these alkaloid frequencies quickly form a vehicle to higher spheres, to deeper spheres, to distant spheres. On The Roots of Rebellion, strings whirl through a wall of blistering drones that sigh now and then. A light astral trance is generated by intermediate tingling of an electronic nature, making its way to your retina and then triggering your cyber imagination. Becoming empty for more than fifteen minutes. Virtue of the Vicious is of a completely different nature. "Post-rocking", with traditional instruments, buzzing and booming on a long wave of feedback and distortion, twilight like the setting sun, but also sharp at the same time. A double layering full of contrasts. The concave sounds flow into Chorus of Dissolution, which has a finely controlled subcutaneous dynamics, sometimes hidden in the constantly sustained tones, sometimes simply emerging as minimal from the exuberance. Magnus Lindberg is clearly there, his rhythm saves me. I Provoke Disorder is indeed provocative. The filthy horror of Michiel Eikenaar, the disharmony that is portrayed with grandeur and verve as if it were the most normal thing in the world, the pride with which the sound wall is erected.
