Seven months after the murder of Sarah Everard the Police have created a tool to make women and girls feel safe. #streetsafe is a tool that allows women and girls to anonymously flag public places and mark on a map the areas where they feel unsafe while remaining anonymous. “We want communities to work with us to target the issue. The Street Safe tool is one way we can focus on the areas people feel unsafe in, to help target hotspot areas.” Said Chief Constable of Norfolk, Paul Sanford. Mr Sanford’s comments came after the North Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner apologised for suggesting women should be more “streetwise” in a BBC interview. Last week former Metropolitan Police officer Wayne Couzens was given a whole life sentence for the kidnap and murder of Ms Everard. Mr Sanford told me “It’s men who need to change here. The problem with violence against women and girls is it’s perpetrated by men and it’s for them to change their ways not women.” Watch the whole unedited interview here.
