Two superlative vocalists on show here: Melissa Manchester and Barbra Streisand. 'Just One Lifetime' was penned by Melissa with Tom Snow, who co-created so many pop classics in the 1970's and 1980's: including Melissa's Grammy win 'You Should Hear How She Talks About You', 'He's So Shy' by The Pointer Sisters; 'Let's Hear It For The Boy' by Deniece Williams and 'You' which was a huge hit for Marcia Hines. Tom collaborated with some of the greats: Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann and Dean Pitchford among others. He also released solo albums of his own back in those decades. 'Just One Lifetime' was first recorded by Melissa Manchester on her 1985 LP 'Mathematics' which was chronically overlooked but contains some brilliant tracks, including this gorgeous ballad which was tasty bait for a singer of Barbra Streisand's calibre. Babs didn't record it until 1999 on the LP 'A Love Like Ours' which was inspired by her marriage to actor James Brolin, which is why the album art work has so many images of the happy couple. Neither version of 'Just One Lifetime' was issued as a single, but it is such a beautiful song, and as my regular visitors know, Melissa Manchester is my all time favourite singer - hands down! I have had the joy of seeing her not once but twice in concert: the only two occasions she toured Australia; and on the second occasion I made sure I met my goddess of music, and had a lovely hug and chat with her! She was even more wonderful and gracious than I could have imagined. An unforgettable night. Across my lifetime I have been a fan of Barbra Streisand, but more in respect for her voice and long career; than an affectionate attachment, as I have with other female vocalists. There is absolutely no denying the brilliance and impact of this extraordinary talent. Her ability and ambition to become not only an Academy Award winning actor; a stage and screen star, a multi platinum recording artist spanning 6 decades, and an icon of showbusiness puts her in the stratosphere of legends, and history will celebrate her achievements ad infinitum. I am keen to see how others rate these two versions of the sweet ballad. Obviously Melissa wins it for me; not only as a co-writer but also her stirring and impassioned vocal. Barbra makes it look effortless, but its not an easy song to sing. Two Divas in one post....(3 if you count me; he he!)
