Post Digital Cultures, 4-5.12.2015, Lausanne Symposium presented by the Federal Office of Culture (FOC), Switzerland and Les Urbaines. As a didactic exercise, Sean Dockray compares and contrasts two institutions of education that he’s been a part of: The Public School, which is an autonomous, selforganized project that he initiated in 2007, and the University of Melbourne, where he is currently a PhD candidate. More abstractly, what is the relationship between institutions and counter-institutions? What kinds of reciprocity, exchange, antagonism, and expropriation develop between the two? Every field has its passages between academia and the world outside, but art’s thresholds are particularly mutable. Dockray is hoping that a cursory mapping of this interface can suggest some possible futures for art education; particularly if, rather than thinking of the counter-institutions as something akin to new buildings, we instead imagine them like scaffolding that attaches onto existing buildings, creating new architectures in-between.
