It is a widely held tenet in analytics that data must be put in context and made relatable for it to have meaning. The same should hold true for explanations of the structures, processes, and procedures that generate those analytics. At the Center for Improving Value in Health Care (CIVHC), descriptions of the Colorado All Payer Claims Database (CO APCD) frequently focus on technical aspects of the data or analytic details. This consistent alienation of large portions CIVHC’s audience was at the heart of the strategy to re-imagine the CO APCD Annual Report. Each year, CIVHC is required to report on the activities and administration of the CO APCD to the Colorado General Assembly. The report had evolved over the years into a dense and complex document, brimming with industry-specific minutiae. The majority of the Colorado General Assembly does not have a background in health care – much less the niche world of health care claims data. For all of CIVHC’s innovation and achievements, no one could understand what we accomplished. It was not a document that fostered inclusion. It is CIVHC’s hope to open and further the conversation about the significance of accessible and inclusive communications in the specialized world of health data and analytics. This work that we are all engaged in is vitally important but we will only be successful if everyone is at the table. Presented by: Stephanie Spriggs, MALS, Sr. Communication and Marketing Specialist; Ryan C. Smith, Graphic Designer November 7th, 2023 * Center for Improving Value in Health Care (CIVHC) is an objective, not-for-profit organization. Through services, health data, and analytics, we partner with Change Agents to drive towards the Triple Aim for all Coloradans. We believe that together we can alter the trajectory of health care and we are privileged to serve those striving toward a better health system for us all.
