By the end of the video you’ll be able to distinguish the difference between all three engines, understand the pros and cons and why one boat might be preferable over the other. These engines are located inside the hull, hence the name inboard. Within the category of inboards, there’s 2 different types you could encounter: V-Drive and D-Drive, both with their own performance benefits. D-Drive means that the engine is mounted in the centre of the boat and the rudder is built into the hull underneath the boat. This design doesn't produce much wake, and therefore it’s a great boat option for slalom water skiers. On the downside, even though this design is energy efficient, the placement of the engine takes up substantial mid-cabin space that could have been allocated more efficiently for storage. D-Drives can also be noisier due to the engine location in the middle of the boat, which may impede you from having conversations amongst passengers. Another thing, picture having a big awkward hump in the middle of your boat, maybe this could double as another seat, but maybe not. V-Drive means that the motor is stowed under the rear, putting more weight towards the transom creating more wake. These boats are perfect for water-sports! If you’re into wake boarding, tubing, wake surfing, then this is what you’re probably going to go for. These boats have more storage and usually have better seating. These boats are also more expensive than d-drives, and keep in mind there’s more parts involved with this design and there’s a bigger potential for repairs or things that could break and go wrong. With all inboards trailering is tricky as the outdrive, prop etc. extends below and there’s no trim tilt option. There's more chance of incurring damage if you’re doing any advanced maneuvers. If you’re new to boating, this is definitely something to consider. Now let’s look at outboards! With outboards, the motor is mounted OUTSIDE of the boat’s hull high on the transom, hence the name outboard. The steering is controlled by moving the entire engine. There could be a handle for steering and tilting, or you could have power steering and power trim tilt as an option. You can find dependable outboards from 30 years ago that still run great. Additionally, you can do so much of the maintenance yourself! They’re convenient to work with and the housing case comes right off the top. The engine is a complete unit on its own and can be removed and attached on a new boat at any time. That option alone provides you a lot of versatility. These boats are great for shallow water, and the best option for fishermen.The propeller can easily be tilted up and out of the water as you come to shore. This also means the prop won’t accumulate any algae, marine growth, or barnacles since it’s not resting in the water all the time. Cons of outboard? Older outboards are loud, and they smell…. great!!! (This is of course up to personal preference, but it's an iconic smell for many.) You can still get the same power as an inboard, but you’ll need multiple engines mounted on the boat. You can’t do true wake surfing, and you lose a platform at the back because of the location of the motor. Lastly lets talk about Sterndrives, also referred to as inboard/outboard for the reason that they have similarities of both. Similar to an inboard, the 4 stroke engine is mounted on the inside of the boat. Some benefits of having a sterndrive is the hot look and design appeal achieved from a more handsome transom since the engine is hidden.
