The Campiello del Spezier, in the district of Santa Croce, is situated between two bridges leading respectively to Santa Maria Mater Domini and San Stae. It is adjacent to the charming Corte Zanetti, named after a wealthy family that inhabited it in the 17th century. Alongside the entrance to the courtyard, a small cast-iron fountain with a cubic upper part is noticeable. The Campiello del Spezier, so named due to the presence, during the time of the Serenissima Republic, of some spice shops, witnessed the art of the "Spezieri" divided into two branches: "Spezieri" for medicines, also known as pharmacists, and "Spezieri" known as "Grosso," who packaged "Sacchetti di Spezie" (bags of spices). These mixtures included aromas such as pepper, ginger, saffron, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, coriander, as well as violet essence and rose water, used as perfumes, brought to Venice by Venetian merchants. The Republic of Venice played a significant role in European gastronomic culture, and trade with Mediterranean countries allowed it to hold the primacy in spice export throughout Europe."
