Warning signs of colon cancer and 4 Unusual symptoms? 90 % of patients with colon cancer are diagnosed after they develop symptoms, these symptoms could be the common once, emergency symptoms or unusual symptoms. Symptoms of colon cancer vary with the anatomic location of the cancer. It can arise from the cecum (the first part of the colon which is connected to the small intestine), ascending colon, transverse colon, descending, or sigmoid part of the colon, and from the rectum, in this case it is called rectal cancer. Because stool is relatively liquid as it passes from small intestine into the right-side colon, cancers arising on the right side may become quite large without resulting in any obstructive symptoms or, noticeable alterations like constipation or, diarrhoea. The right colon cancer commonly ulcerates, leading to chronic, slow blood loss without a change in the appearance of the stool. As a result, patients with cancers of the right-side colon often present with symptoms of anemia such as fatigue, palpitations, and tinnitus, indicative of iron deficiency due to this chronic blood loss. Because the cancers may bleed intermittently, a random fecal occult blood test may be negative. As a result, the unexplained presence of iron-deficiency anemia in any adult male and post-menopausal women should have thorough endoscopic and colonoscopy evaluation. Because stool becomes more formed as it passes into the transverse and descending colon, cancers arising on the left side colon results in the development of abdominal cramping, occasional obstruction, and even perforation. Cancers arising in the sigmoid, the most distal part of colon above the rectum and in the rectum itself, are often associated with frank bleeding per rectum, tenesmus, and narrowing of the caliber of stool; but anemia is an infrequent in cancers arising this area. In addition to the signs and symptoms, there is one excellent laboratory test which has a much higher predictive value than any single or combination of symptoms, which is positive fecal occult test. When fecal occult test is positive it warrants high priority for colonoscopic follow-up. Unfortunately, one in five patients with this cancer are first diagnosed in advanced stage of the disease which is with metastatic disease, to regional lymph nodes, liver, lungs, and peritoneum. Rarely colorectal cancer has Unusual presentations, these include malignant fistula formation with adjacent area, like to the urinary bladder and patients notice stool passing through the urethra. Another unusual sign is patients can have fever for which the root cause is unknown until they finally found to have colon cancer. The next unusual feature is presentation with sepsis from gastrointestinal bacteria’s particularly sepsis from Streptococcus bovis and, the other unusual presentation is cancer of unknown origin, which means someone has cancer diagnosis, but the primery origin of this cancer is undetermined. In general, the presence of symptoms and their particular type provide clue about the expected outcome of treatment. Patients who are symptomatic at diagnosis typically have more advanced disease and a worse prognosis. Among the symptoms of colon cancer, Obstruction and perforation carry a poor prognosis, independent of stage of the cancer. The total number of symptoms may be inversely related to survival for colon cancer. The diagnosis of colon cancer is made by biopsy that is usually obtained during lower gastrointestinal tract endoscopy or from a surgical specimen. CT colonoscopy is an alternative to colonoscopy with comparable sensitivity. To sum up, try to recognize colon cancer early and avoid complications related with delayed diagnosis.
