A recording by Robert Fielding using the Blackburn Cathedral digital set for Hauptwerk by Llannerch Organs. Alain studied Harmony and Fugue under Georges Caussade during the years 1930 – 1933. He struggled to bring his free spirit into line with traditional composition techniques. For the January 1932 examination, Alain presented his 'Variation sur l’hymne ‘Lucis Creator’. After this exam, Alain’s music history teacher Maurice Emmanuel wrote to Canon Henri Tissot. ‘At the examination in fugue, I saw a fine assignment done by Alain: choral variations for organ, skilfully written. His fugal exposition, written in isolation, was not yet perfect, and the grade he received was consequently low. But this is of no importance, and I believe this young musician to be quite talented.’ A recording of the plainchant is available at: • Hymnus: Lucis creator optime (right click and 'Open link in new tab'!) English translation of the hymn by John Henry Newman: Father of Lights, by whom each day Is kindled out of night, Who, when the heavens were made, didst lay Their rudiments in light; Thou, who didst bind and blend in one The glistening morn and evening pale, Hear Thou our plaint, when light is gone, And lawlessness and strife prevail. Hear, lest the whelming weight of crime Wreck us with life in view; Lest thoughts and schemes of sense and time Earn us a sinner's due. So may we knock at Heaven's door, And strive the immortal prize to win, Continually and evermore Guarded without and pure within. Grant this, O Father, Only Son, And Spirit, God of grace, To whom all worship shall be done In every time and place.
