Douglas Rushkoff is one of the most influential intellectuals in the world and has coined terms such as ‘digital natives’ and ‘viral media’. In this interview, he explains how the internet was transformed from a vision of digital grassroots democracy into a market dominated by tech billionaires. Topics in this episode: 00:00 What has become of the internet utopia of the past? 14:13 Did Douglas Rushkoff realize that something had shifted? 22:30 The mindset of tech billionaires 42:10 The hope of escaping the self-inflicted apocalypse In the early 1990s, digital pioneers like Douglas Rushkoff envisioned the internet as a power-free space that would provide access to information for everyone, allowing people to exchange ideas freely. However, instead of global networking and barrier-free education, companies like Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Apple increasingly turned the open network into a market dominated by a few key players. For Douglas Rushkoff, who now teaches media theory at the New York Public University and has been named one of the ten most influential intellectuals worldwide by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, this reversal stems from a specific ideology. Leading figures in Silicon Valley, such as Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, and Peter Thiel, exhibit a particular "mindset"—a kind of doctrine of the genius superhuman who leaves ordinary people behind and blindly relies on solving problems through technology. In his book ‘Survival of the Richest’, Douglas Rushkoff also describes how tech oligarchs are building luxurious bunkers to escape in the event of a system collapse that they themselves have helped create. Wolfram Eilenberger asks the digital thought leader how this development came about and looks with him at the current situation and near future, where the alliance between Donald Trump and Elon Musk further merges political power with technology, signaling a radical restructuring of society. 🔔 Subscribe to SRF Kultur Sternstunden on YouTube now 👉 https://www.youtube.com/srfkultur?sub...
