China Steam 2009 Part 8 - Jalainur 2 The Big Pit & Washery

A trip to China to visit some of the last remaining steam locations 19th March to April 10th 2009. Featured in Part 8 is The incredible steam action at Jalainur Opencast Mine and the Washery. The second of five videos features SJ 2-8-2's at work in the big pit and at the washery sidings. The main types of train are ones carrying coal from the coal face to the unloader conveyor which connects to the washery and ones carrying the spoil from the workings to be dumped at the far end of the pit. There are also the explosives train, workers trains and PW trains involved in slewing the track as the coal is dug out. Exiting the washery sidings involved a steep climb and sometimes trains had to be double headed although occasionally one of the two new diesels was called for. It was hard to believe that only seven months after my visit in April 2009 the trains in the big pit would all be swept away to be relaced by road transport. Locos seen are SY 2-8-2's 0471 (1972), 1601 (1988), 1126 (1981), 1240 (1983), 1303 (1984), 1375 (1985), 1587 (1987), 1654 (1989), 1664 (1989) and many more. DF7G Co-Co 5198 (2009)
