National Park Weerribben-Wieden, with over 10,000 hectares, is the largest contiguous raised bog area in Northwestern Europe. It is a labyrinth of ponds, lakes, ditches, mysterious-looking swamp forests, expansive reed beds, and flower-filled hay meadows. Since the 12th century, the existing peat bogs were extracted and dried on narrow strips of land, known as 'the ribben.' To transport the peat, ditches and canals, called 'the weren', were dug. It is a unique natural area that has been formed under the influence of human hands. Near the National Park lies the historic village of Giethoorn, known for its small bridges and still fully accessible only by boat. It is often referred to as the "Venice of the Netherlands." The walk takes place in the Wieden, an area with hay meadows full of flowers and butterflies, dragonflies, water lilies in the ditches, otters and deers, and twisted willows in a swamp forest. https://en.visitweerribbenwieden.com/ With the FREE “Subscribe” button you will stay informed of all my videos on / @walksinnationalparks If you enjoyed the walk, please click the “like” button.
