The third Selam is the moment of spiritual intoxication! Having surrendered and released the ego, the lover now tastes freedom and joy. It is the dance of those who have said “yes” to Love. Several central elements of Mevlevi mysticism appear here: the remembrance of Shams of Tabriz, the sacred dance (sema), the symbolism of mystic wine, and the expression of ecstatic joy. The music of this Selam, as in the previous sections, is traditionally attributed to Hüseyin Fahreddin Dede (1854–1911). Hüseyin Fahreddin Dede was born on 10 Muharrem 1271 (3 October 1854) in the Beşiktaş Mevlevîhane in Istanbul, where his father, Hasan Nazif Dede, served as sheikh. He received the name Hüseyin because he was born during a Mevlevi sema ceremony in which the Hüseynî Âyin-i Şerif was being performed. O You, worthy of a thousand praises what kind of sovereign are You? Those who become Your servants become kings and emperors. Whoever today turns toward Veled with trust if poor, becomes rich; if rich, becomes a sultan. Since the beginning of this day we have been restless and intoxicated. In our bewilderment we speak for we have truly become bewildered. For a moment we drink the wine of the ancient path of Love; for a moment we say “Yes” to the primordial covenant. We have returned again from the tavern, drunk. We are freed again from high and low. All the intoxicated ones have become joyful and dancing. Clap your hands, O idols of beauty clap, clap! What need has that beautiful Master of any price or bargain? What value could there be beside the Beloved? Through the mercy of Shams of Tabriz each heart receives its own portion. O Lord, I am ashamed of my faults. I am embarrassed by my wrong words and actions. Pour into my heart a grace from the sacred realm, so that every false illusion may vanish from my heart. #ramadan2026 #sema #ney #ottomanmusic
