We all want to believe that everything happens for a reason; that the universe has a plan, and that all we need to do is be patient and wait for it. But that comes at a cost: If it's true that we're just living out a linear story written in the stars, then it also means choice must be an illusion. I think the healthier way to look at life is to accept that there are many paths available to us. We aren't just slaves to a pre-ordained script. We can always broaden our focus, change our paths, and do something different with our lives. And if that's true, then it is cause for us to have hope every day - because no matter where we find ourselves, there's something in our power that we can do about it. Maybe it feels a bit discouraging to accept that everything is just random, that there isn't any perfect happy ending just waiting to be made manifest for us. But knowing that we can change our own course can be liberating, too.
