A second-degree burn affects both the outer and underlying layers of skin, causing redness, swelling, blisters, and severe pain. If you have a second-degree burn, immediately run cool (not icy) water over the area for 10-15 minutes, then gently pat it dry and cover it with a sterile, non-stick bandage. Avoid popping blisters, as this can lead to infection. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help manage discomfort, but if the burn is large or located on the face, hands, feet, or joints, seek medical attention. A third-degree burn is much more severe, damaging deeper layers of skin and sometimes nerves, making the area appear white, charred, or leathery. Since third-degree burns may not be painful due to nerve damage, they require immediate emergency medical attention. Proper burn care can prevent infections and complications.
