This film shows the excavation of the earliest known European church to be built in sub Saharan Africa, as news of the dig spreads. The church’s remains, dating from the C15th, were found together with a huge burial ground of slaves and slave traders in Cidade Velha on the Cabo Verde islands off West Africa. Archaeologists describe the site as “spectacular” for the invaluable information it is providing about Cabo Verde’s remarkable past at the centre of New World expansion and the Atlantic Slave trade. Cidade Velha (formerly Riberia Grande) holds a unique status in Cabo Verde as the nation's founding place, which is now recognised for its monuments and historical importance as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was here too that the early Creole culture developed and from where it was then disseminated around the world.
