ICM SITE: The Guimaras Experience: Rising above the oil spill tragedy

In 2006, Guimaras was hit by the worst oil spill in its history. The damage it caused to the province’s coastal and marine resources accounts to Php8.3 billion pesos of ecosystem services that almost crippled the drivers of its local economy. The tragedy prompted the province to employ an environmental management framework that will provide a holistic and integrated approach in the sustainable development and management of its coastal and marine areas. This led to the adoption of the integrated coastal management (ICM) as one of the strategies of PEMSEA in coastal and marine management in 2008.
