Polarities: Gandhi, Savarkar and Jinnah Makarand R. Paranjape, Alex Von Tunzelmann and Kishwar Desai in conversation Three extraordinary figures, Mahatma Gandhi, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, and Muhammad Ali Jinnah shaped the destiny of undivided India through starkly divergent ideologies. Unified at moments and irreconcilably divided at others, their contrasting visions of nationhood and freedom continue to steer political discourse today. This session brings together eminent writers and historians to explore their complex legacies. Alex von Tunzelmann, historian and author of Indian Summer, reflects on the decisive role Jinnah and Gandhi played in Partition and the global ramifications of their political choices. Kishwar Desai, award-winning writer and playwright who set up the world’s first Partition Museum, discusses the late Meghnad Desai’s Mohan and Muhammad, exploring the untold lives, ideals and conflicts of Gandhi and Jinnah.
