#coloncancerawareness Charles Friel, MD, has been a colorectal surgeon for 23 years. But he had fallen behind on his own cancer screenings. Learn more at: https://uvahealth.com/services/colon-... I was diagnosed with my colorectal cancer just about a week shy of my 59th birthday. My diagnosis was made on a checkup. I was not feeling bad. I had no symptoms. I got my colonoscopy largely because my wife had reminded me that I was way behind. I scheduled to an appointment with my doctor and I got my scope, but I was not having any symptoms at all. I was anxious about the surgery. I was anxious about the outcomes. I also have a lot of insight to what can go well, but I also had some insight into what could not go so well. And so that was scary, but I also had great confidence in the team that I was working with. And I knew that they were going to give everything of themselves and that I was going to really get top-notch care. Part of my diagnosis and part of my discussion with my surgeon, Dr. Hedrick, we talked about the need for a temporary ileostomy, which was a bag on my side. Obviously, like all patients, I wasn’t really excited about that, but I was able to kind of manage that with the help of my team, my nursing team. I will say one thing I got great appreciation for was the quality of our nursing teams, especially the nursing teams at night. They taught me how to care for my ileostomy. Fortunately, I was able to make a pretty rapid recovery and within about a month, I was actually seeing patients and I was even operating. I was out with my friends playing some tennis and I did that all with an ileostomy. As a result of my wife encouraging me to get my colonoscopy, I was fortunate to find a cancer that was early without any symptoms and now I’m two years out free of disease.
