His cheerful, bright, and sunny portraits depicting carefree people picnicking and playing at the beach are testaments to his attitude toward life. Potthast was accepted by Cincinnati’s new McMicken School of Design as a charter student at the age of twelve. He studied there for more than a decade, off and on, under the tutelage of portrait and figure painter Thomas Satterwhite Noble. Potthast enjoyed the benefit of learning Noble’s rich technique, which included using a dark palette. Potthast traveled to Europe in 1881, and he studied under Charles Verlat and Polydore Beaufaux in Antwerp. He later moved on to Munich’s Royal Academy, following in the footsteps of many Cincinnati artists, including Frank Duveneck, Robert Blum, John Henry Twachtman, and Joseph De Camp. While at the Royal Academy, Potthast was instructed by American-born Carl Marr. After leaving Munich, Potthast studied at the Academie Julian in Paris. Potthast continued studying with Noble after his return to Cincinnati in 1885 and at the same time worked as a lithographer to support himself. During this time, his art was influenced by the Dutch style of painting. He painted indoor scenes as well as landscapes in dark tones and solid strokes. Potthast went back to Paris in 1886 and studied with Fernand Corman. Potthast met Irish-born Roderic O’Conor and American Robert Vonnoh in 1889. They were landscape painters working for the Grcz colony, which specialized in Impressionist paintings with scrambled surfaces. The Grcz colony deeply affected Potthast’s art, making him a permanent convert to Impressionism. He returned to Cincinnati with sunny portraits such asSunshineand was the only American featured in the Paris Salon exhibit in 1889. Potthast moved to New York City in 1895 to establish himself as an artist. He set up a painting studio and exhibited his work in Chicago in 1896 and at the National Academy of Design in 1897. After moving to New York, he painted scenes from Far Rockaway and Coney Island. On New England trips, he made paintings depicting Cape Cod, Rockport, and Gloucester in Massachusetts and Ogunuquit and Monhegan Island in Maine. Potthast was an introverted man and never married, although he had a close relationship with his nephew, who was also his namesake. Edward Henry Potthast died of a heart attack in his New York studio in 1927." --- SUBSCRIBE: www.youtube.com/c/LearnFromMasters?su...
