It unwinds dreams of the American countryside; long drives through the Oregon Cascades Mountain ranges and family vacations. It sends viewers deep into Deschutes County, Oregon for a dip in clear lakes; Elk, Lava and Devil. The Pacific NW’s varied landscape slopes over rolling neon greens, jagged rock formations of Three Sisters, the Cascades, Cathedral Rock and long country roads with names stuck like Yellow Elk Lane. The opening portion features the family fishing Oregon’s lakes and milling the Deschutes National Forest and campgrounds. Later sections tour Picture Rock petroglyphs, Pelton Hydroelectric Project water dam, Cove Palisades State Park and the Painted Hills. 00:00 “Filming America” (:09) opens on snow topped Cascades cut up through evergreens and Douglas firs (:17). A resort home follows (:41). A lone boater wades through lake waters (:52). ‘Cascade vista’ (1:08) appears superimposed over a faded sherbet shaded rainbow. Yellow Elk Lane runs for mountain ridges (1:49). Small pastel pleasure boats (2:02) bump against Elk Lake’s rocky shoreline (2:02) rimmed by the Three Sisters. An older man of the group splashes feet into waters (2:24); he yells and kicks and washes his ankles (2:29). Luxury resort stone homes follow (3:00). Vacationers mingle on the sand (3:07) in a view from the water. Sunshine kicks off the boat (3:17) and a van sits on the dock in a view from the shoreline. The troupe tours Lava lake (4:08). Two pale blue lined white boats and their drivers sit between mountains and wild grasses (4:24). The Forest Service insignia appears stamped on the sign for Devil’s Lake (4:59). Cars play chase down the country highway (5:41). Close shots pass over oil black jagged rock formations (5:48).Native American pictograph (6:15) at Picture Rock Pass petroglyphs site. Travelers trace pictographs (6:15). Wide shots pass over Bend, Oregon captured from Pilot Butte (6:48); tall evergreens and paved roads split the homes in rows, white mountains of the Cascades (7:00) rise in background. Landscape and foliage shots follow (7:22). A map shows Diamond Lake (9:14). Heading for Crater lake (9:20), travelers pause at a shop passing a pink 1950’s Mercury Montclair (9:27). A speed boat tugs a skier (15:30). Shots of the dam wall follow (16:15). On route for the gorge in Oregon (16:24), they pass a rest stop with their Mercury Park Lane (16:34). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
