Jason Roth, Water Management Engineer for the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service in Minnesota explains why installing denitrifying bioreactors are an important practice to reduce the amount of nitrates flowing from farm fields into Minnesota's streams, rivers and lakes, and ultimately down to the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. Mark Dittich, Senior Planner for the Minnesota Department of Agriculture and Jessica Bakken, Conservation Technician for the Dodge County Soil and Water District discuss the major steps in the construction of the denitrifying woodchip bioreactor at the edge of Roger Toquam's farm field near Dodge Center Minnesota. Mr. Toquam explains why reducing the nitrate levels flowing from his fields is so important to protect the environment and allow his family to continue to farm in this part of Minnesota the way they have for generations.
