'Lolita', the latest feature from award-winning filmmaker Jorge Xolalpa (Your Iron Lady, Strangelove), will screen at the 31st Annual San Antonio Film Festival (SAFilm) on Sunday, July 27, 2025, at 12:30 p.m. I spoke with Xolalpa, who wrote, directed, and produced the film and rising star Alexis Vazquez, who makes his powerful debut as Jesús. A gripping portrait of redemption and resilience, 'Lolita' follows Jesús, an openly gay man navigating life after a nine-year sentence for a nonviolent drug offense. As he fights to rebuild his life and reunite with his daughter, Lolita, he must confront stigma, systemic injustice, and the lingering effects of incarceration. Shot over just ten days in the working-class neighborhoods of Los Angeles, the film is both raw and lyrical. It features a haunting original score by longtime Xolalpa collaborator Ralf Lichtenberg and an original song by Reginal Del Carmen, written specifically for the film. Vazquez’s layered performance anchors the story, supported by a diverse ensemble cast that includes Johnny Ortiz ('McFarland, USA'), Plutarco Haza ('El Señor de los Cielos'), Katherine Castro ('Someday'), and Academy Award nominee Eric Roberts ('Runaway Train', 'The Dark Knight', 'Star 80', 'Best of the Best'). Both Castro and Vazquez are set to star in Xolalpa’s upcoming immigration thriller Huehxolotl, now in pre-production. Produced under Xolalpa’s Mighty Aphrodite Pictures and Latin Entertainment Work, Lolita continues his commitment to telling emotionally urgent stories on indie terms. Executive producers include Rafael Loza, Victoria Del Rosal, and Nelson Saenz. A deeply human look at fatherhood, queerness, and the search for dignity, Lolita is poised to resonate at SAFilm and beyond.
