What is Backpriming? Backpriming is a technique used to fill secondary IV tubing with the primary IV solution, helping prevent medication waste and air bubbles during piggyback medication administration. --- Step-by-Step: How to Backprime a Piggyback Line 1. Check the Provider’s Order Confirm the correct medication, dosage, and time for administration. 2. Gather Supplies IV pole Primary IV tubing connected to a running IV line Secondary (piggyback) medication bag Secondary tubing Alcohol swabs and gloves 3. Verify Medication & Patient Identity Use the 6 Rights of Medication Administration and scan if using barcoding. 4. Prepare the Secondary Bag Spike the piggyback medication bag with the secondary IV tubing. DO NOT prime it yet. 5. Lower the Secondary Bag Below the Primary Bag Hang the primary IV fluid higher on the pole. Lower the piggyback medication bag below the level of the primary bag. 6. Connect the Secondary Tubing to the Primary Y-Site Attach the secondary tubing to the Y-port located above the IV pump (closest to the patient). 7. Open the Clamp on the Secondary Tubing Gravity will allow the primary fluid to flow backward into the secondary tubing, pushing air out and priming the line. 8. Watch for Air Bubble Removal Allow the tubing to fill until it reaches the medication chamber. Close the clamp once full. 9. Rehang the Piggyback Bag Above the Primary Line Raise the secondary medication bag so it now hangs higher than the primary IV bag. 10. Start the Infusion Set the IV pump (or gravity flow rate) per your facility protocol. Monitor the site and patient closely. --- Why Backpriming Matters: ✅ Saves time and supplies ✅ Reduces medication waste ✅ Prevents air embolism ✅ Promotes safe IV medication delivery Looking for more skills training?
