In this video, I highlight an overlooked risk in Bitcoin's ongoing Spam War: the Libre Relay network. While many focus on Bitcoin Knots vs. Bitcoin Core v30, I explain how Libre Relay's preferential peering completely bypasses mempool policy norms, feeding spam directly to miners. I then introduce Garbageman - a modified Bitcoin node by Chris Guida (based on Bitcoin Knots) - that preferentially peers with Libre Relay nodes but refuses to relay spam, adding friction and rate-limiting to protect the chain. Finally, I demo my Garbageman VM Manager script, which lets you spin up as many Garbageman nodes as your hardware can support, and I walk through a clean VirtualBox sandbox setup, download, and full usage tutorial. What you'll learn: Why Libre Relay poses a higher on-chain spam risk than the Knots/Core v30 debate may recognize How preferential peering circumvents mempool policy norms How Garbageman works as a practical defense How to deploy a fleet of Garbageman nodes using my VM Manager in a reproducible sandbox CHAPTERS: 00:00 Overview & threat model 03:42 Installing Virtualbox 10:09 Downloading Linux Mint 11:22 Creating a VM sandbox 13:43 Optimizing VM settings 20:28 Installing Linux Mint 28:47 Introducing Garbageman VM Manager 34:19 Quick Start 36:08 Call for testers 37:33 Creating the base VM 43:20 Recovering from crash to terminal prompt 52:57 Initial sync 56:33 Creating clones 58:00 Starting up the nodes begin operations! 1:02:12 Conclusion Links to tools referenced in the video: Garbageman VM Manager (script): https://github.com/paulscode/garbagem...
