Since the industrial revolution, building design has been dictated by mass-produced and carbon-intensive materials, technologies, and processes, ignoring the climate of a place and the principles of building physics resulting in structures that consume huge amounts of fossil fuels. This is why one of the fields of study for an energy-efficient building design is building physics. With building physics, thermodynamic principles are applied to determine, for one, the materials or the combination of materials that will be suitable for a particular climate, region, and design. For this course, the focus is on establishing a basic understanding of the role of building physics in designing a climate-responsive and energy-efficient building.
