Celebrating 190 years of Zwartz

Dutch textile company Zwartz has appointed Roderik Zwartz as CEO. He follows in the footsteps of his father, Ronald Zwartz, becoming the sixth generation to lead the family business. The leadership transition comes at a significant moment in the company’s history, as Zwartz celebrates its 190th anniversary this year. Zwartz has been producing textiles in Oldenzaal since 1835. What started as a weaving mill in Twente has grown into an international enterprise with three main divisions: Decorations, Textiles, and Laminating. The Decorations division supplies decorative textiles for the professional market. The Laminating division offers both tailored production and expert support, helping clients choose the right material combinations, build up functional layers, and apply suitable lamination techniques. The Textiles division focuses mainly on technical fabrics made from natural or recycled fibres, with strong attention to quality, performance, and environmental impact. These textiles are widely used in agriculture and civil engineering. Zwartz’s 100% natural geotextiles, for instance, help stabilise soil and infrastructure without releasing microplastics into the environment. “It’s an honour to take over the reins,” says Roderik Zwartz. “We will keep innovating alongside our clients and partners. Wherever the technology allows, we aim to make natural textile solutions the standard. That way, we can help reduce the presence of microplastics in soil and water. We’re building on 190 years of experience. Knowledge, reliability, and innovation remain at the heart of what we do.” Ronald Zwartz considers this the right time for the transition. “The company has always adapted to changing times. Roderik understands our clients, our team, and how things work on the factory floor. I am handing over with confidence and will remain available to ensure a smooth and careful transition.” Innovation has always been a core part of Zwartz’s identity. From its local factory, the company continues to develop new applications for its natural products. These are tested and validated both in the lab and in practice. The process is step-by-step, starting with validation before scaling up. This structured approach will remain central under the new CEO. With local production, short lines of communication, and clear agreements, Zwartz maintains its trusted way of working. The anniversary will be marked in a modest way. Zwartz is choosing to focus on its clients, product development, and reliable delivery, rather than large celebrations. A more extensive reflection on the company’s past and future is planned for the 200th anniversary in 2035.
