The future of stroke research

Michael Tymianski, MD, PhD, FRCSC, University Health Network and University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada, discusses the areas of significant research focus for the near future in stroke. The stroke field is rapidly evolving; however, the use of neuroprotective agents in clinical practice has failed. Prof. Tymianski highlights the importance of proving the concept of neuroprotection in humans and how the success of agents like nerinetide could create interest in the field. Additionally, research on restoration of blood flow is key, as well as identifying endovascular thrombectomy candidates and better clot busters. This interview took place during the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) 2021 Annual Meeting.
