Site: 100' x 80' Location: Bangalore Situated in the sprawling residential community of Palm Meadows in Bangalore, the design brief was to build upon an existing structure, to cater to the family’s growing needs. One of the key challenges in the design process was to retain the existing green spaces and have minimal impact on trees present on the site. One of the strategies deployed to address these challenges was to bring the existing garden within the house and wrap the internal spaces around it. This helped us in not only bringing in natural lights in large volume but also provide ubiquitous views of the garden from most spaces. The general tonality and experiential quality of the house is born out of a diverse mix of Balinese architecture, traditional craftsmanship and modern sensibilities. Light played a crucial role, not just for illumination but as an integral design element. Skylights strategically positioned between the garden and the dining area create an interesting play of light and shadows. One standout feature is the floating puja space, designed to appear as though it is levitating on water. Vastu principles guided the orientation of the puja room, making it a focal point visible from various common spaces within the home. In terms of materiality, the primary material for the puja room is stone; giving it a sculpted and organic look. In this architectural journey, the past was carefully preserved, integrated, and harmonized with the new. The result is a home that effortlessly blends the best of both worlds: traditional and modern, light and shadow, and nature and design.
