People are searching for the largest woodpecker in the United States. But is it extinct? Let's learn about Ivory-billed Woodpeckers! Please subscribe to continue learning what makes life AWESOME: https://BioBush.tv/subscribe Ivory-billed Woodpeckers lived across the southeast United States in old-growth forests and swamps with large, living trees. As a woodpecker the size of a crow, they used their powerful beaks to strip bark from trees and access bugs that other birds could not. But following the industrial deforestation of the South following the Civil War, the old-growth forests all but disappeared. The population of Ivory-billed Woodpeckers followed. In 1939, the estimated population for the entire species was 24 individuals. The last universally accepted sighting was in 1944. In 2021, the US Fish and Wildlife Service proposed to remove the Ivory-billed Woodpecker from the endangered species list due to it being extinct. But several pieces of evidence were made public that suggest the species MIGHT still exist. The US Fish and Wildlife service is currently asking for any sightings, photos, videos, or other evidence that Ivory-billed Woodpeckers exist.
