Within a short space of time, two high life insurance policies were due in the Munich area, and in both cases there is at least some doubt about the cause of death. The insurance commissioned Jack Clementi to investigate the specific causes. Clementi's investigations lead him to the highly indebted and also with a high life insurance equipped builder Merkl. He barely escapes death on one of his construction sites when a heavy load is released from a crane and crashed to the ground. Finally Merkl sets off to Vienna and comes there in his hotel in an alleged accident in the sauna killed. But Clementi does not believe in these coincidences for a long time, especially as possible witnesses suddenly withdraw their statements or even disappear altogether. Finally, a bible from Merkl's hotel room brings Clementi the crucial clue to a sect that has made it a specialty to organize accidents that kill people who would not take life insurance in the event of suicide. To put the sect to the job Clementi sends his assistant Simon as a potential suicide in the sect.
