Emery County History Society monthly meeting and presentation was given by Mike Ralphs, February 19, 2026, 6:30 pm in the Castle Dale, County Administration building (Old Courthouse. He focused his lecture on slaughterhouses and meatpacking in Ferron, Castle Dale, Orangeville, and Huntington--the businesses and workers that put "meat on the table." Dr. Michael H. Ralphs is a retired researcher with the USDA Agricultural Research Service based in Ferron, Utah. He earned a PhD, specializing in range science, and was recognized with a Sustained Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Range Management in 2020 for his work on weed management and grazing. Mike grew up in Ferron, Utah and has returned to enjoy his retirement there. His father Max Ralphs worked the family farm and served as Utah State meat inspector for Emery and Carbon County for 30 years. So Mike has had close ties with both beef production and meat packing over the years. Dr. Ralphs was formerly affiliated with the USDA Agricultural Research Service. His expertise is in Range science, specifically management of poisonous plants and plant ecology. He served as a Utah State University range specialist after retiring from the USDA.
