Sit by a lakeside window on a perfect afternoon and enjoy the sounds of this 1953 Vornado fan, model B28C1-1 in classic green with a black triple blade made of bakelite. These fans were built in Wichita, Kansas by the O.A. Sutton Company. The Vornado brand was famous for several popular models of household fans manufactured in the United States during the 1940s and 1950s. Pulling 1.5 amps at 110 watts, this fan generates an incredibly powerful breeze and has three speed settings: low, medium and high. The fan in this video is set to medium. Except for the bakelite blade, this fan boasts all-metal construction and is quite solid and heavy. Vornado fans like this one have a special round inlet (visible behind the fan blades) that creates a vortex which causes the air to "spiral." Vornado claimed that this feature, borrowed from the design of piston airplane engines, helped to better circulate air throughout the entire space of a room. As such, these units were not called fans, but "Air Circulators." The combination of raw power and spiralling air produced by this fan create a unique, exhilarating and unforgettable experience. As with all fans of the era, this unit requires regular oiling. Although the original company is long-gone, Vornado returned in 1989 with a new location in Andover, Kansas. Today, you can purchase modern Vornado plastic fans and new, 5-blade re-issue versions of vintage fans (with modern components, and no oiling required) that are very high quality and made of metal. Visible in the scene is a compact and portable Keystone 8mm "triple turret" roll film camera, model KA-1C. Built in Boston, Massachusetts, the camera used Kodachrome color film and had three lenses - a regular 13mm lens, a wide angle 9mm lens, and a 25mm telephoto lens. The camera is metal and feels so durable compared to cheaper-made modern devices. An authentic 1950s wind-up Mickey Mouse all-metal alarm clock built by the Bradley Corporation keeps time, with Mickey's feet moving to a constant and steady "tick-tock." Disney produced several classic films in the 1950s including "Cinderella" and "Peter Pan," and the company opened its famous Disneyland Park on July 15th, 1955. The scene also displays a General Electric metal microphone model 97U29, built by Shure Brothers Inc., and a black 1940s Northern Electric rotary phone - both of which were built in the United States. This video has been professionally recorded with SIX high-end microphones, including a professional binaural ASMR mic to capture the sound of the Vornado's unique and intense air vortex in three dimensions. A second high-end stereo microphone was placed below the airflow to capture the sound of the spinning blades. To capture the engine sound, I used two Rode microphones. All mics had windscreens due to the robust wind gusts which could be felt in every part of the room! (This is a powerful fan!) I believe this combination of recording instruments fully captures the components of the Vornado's sound, giving you a realistic and immersive audio experience. This video is best listened to with headphones or speakers, even laptop speakers. This recording was made with the goal of recreating the Vornado sound as though the fan is right there in the room with you.
