농약 대신 '빛'으로 해충 잡는다 Over on Jeju Island. Farmers of citrus fruits there are turning to blue lights to keep pests at bay and their produce protected. Shin Se-byuck reports. There are lamps installed throughout this citrus greenhouse. The light bulbs emit a blue glow that attracts insects, which are then collected in a net built inside the lamp. This is the latest light trap used to catch tiny yellow tea thrips, an insect that has recently become more invasive and harmful to citrus fruit varieties grown on Jeju Island. They damage the skin of the mandarin, leaving scars on the rind which makes the fruit less marketable. With damage worsening due to the growing number of these thrips in the Seogwipo area, the Jeju Agricultural Research and Extension Service installed the light traps on a trial basis. "The device uses physical light to catch thrips and other micro pests. We’ve introduced it to help farmers with eco-friendly certification or those pursuing eco-friendly farming." In the Gyeongsang-do and Jeollanam-do Provinces, there are many farms already using the light trap. The farmers have heaped praise on the device for its eco-friendly means of controlling pests with reduced use of chemicals. "Even if I spray pesticide regularly, thrips appear in the period in between spraying. But after installing the light trap, I think the number of thrips has decreased at least 50 percent." This light trap is expected to be of greater use to various greenhouse crops especially for fruits like strawberries and mangoes that are grown inside and cannot be sprayed with chemical pesticides even when the pests are found. The trap is not only highly effective in controlling thrips, but also helps manage aphids, greenflies, and moths. The Jeju Agricultural Research and Extension Service expects this device to be the foundation for safer agricultural produce and plans to further analyze and enhance efficacy and eco-friendliness.
