Proximal humeral fractures are the third most common fracture in patients over the age of sixty-five years—a rapidly growing demographic that currently comprises 14% of the total US population. These fractures are often difficult to accurately classify, which is the first step toward effective treatment. They can also be challenging to treat surgically, and many patients are managed initially by surgeons inexperienced with the injury’s complexity. This complimentary JBJS webinar presents findings from two recent JBJS studies that explore the classification and treatment of complex proximal humeral fractures. Milton Little, MD examines the role of 3D CT imaging in helping orthopaedic surgeons classify proximal humeral fractures and make sound treatment recommendations. Derek Cuff, MD analyzes findings from a comparative study that found reverse total shoulder arthroplasty outperforming hemiarthroplasty in treating these fractures in elderly patients. Moderated by JBJS Deputy Editor Andy Green, MD, the webinar also features commentaries on the study findings from shoulder experts Mike Gardner, MD and J. Michael Wiater, MD. The last 15 minutes of the webinar is devoted to a live Q&A session, during which audience members ask questions of the authors and commentators.
