The line from Buxton to Manchester starts you high up in the Peak District and then for an hour slowly brings you down into the city of Manchester, taking you though upland countryside, suburban and finally urban landscapes. Buxton itself is well worth a visit, if only to sample what 19th century mass tourism can do to a small spa town, up in the Derbyshire hills.
