This current episode is a special podcast because it wasn't recorded in the studio but in two underground pedestrian passages in Budapest, at Astoria and Keleti Railway Station. When we hear the word "underpass," we picture a subterranean system with multiple exits where, without a sense of direction, one might even get lost. Today, we take it for granted that large squares in Budapest have underpasses beneath them, but if we think about it, their very existence is quite absurd: people are forced to walk underground, cutting across from one corner to another, buying a salty pretzel from the bakery or a newspaper from the kiosk – essentially doing things that they would normally do on the surface. The first true Budapest underpass was built in connection with the Astoria metro station, and although the metro was only inaugurated in 1970, people had already begun using the underpass in 1963. Underpasses have become venues for impromptu meetings, friendly encounters, begging, and resting places for the homeless – they are bustling, ever-changing stages. For a few days, Sándor Friderikusz and his team approached people, both strangers and acquaintances, in two underpasses. These encounters were compiled into this one-and-a-half-hour podcast. And because the team met so many interesting people and stories, there will be a continuation of this podcast next week.
