In a tragic tale, the Trailside Killer, David Carpenter, terrorized the remote trails near San Francisco, California, between 1979 and 1981. This serial murderer ruthlessly claimed the lives of nine innocent people, masterfully evading the police for nearly two years by meticulously hiding any traces. The Murders Carpenter committed his crimes in mountainous, wooded areas like Mount Tamalpais, Point Reyes, and Santa Cruz. He shot most of his victims and left behind a chilling pattern: a leaf placed on the victim's back, removed clothing, and a missing earring. The Investigation A False Lead: Initially, police pursued a young man in a plaid shirt based on a witness's description. However, this was a false lead, allowing the murders to continue. A Crucial Breakthrough: The turning point in the case came from Stephen Hartle, the surviving boyfriend of victim Ellen Hansen. Hartle's precise description of the killer—a balding man in his 50s who wore glasses—enabled police to correctly identify Carpenter as their suspect. The Arrest: When detectives Walt Robinson and Ken Womack interviewed Carpenter, they noticed his chronic stutter vanished when he talked about the ballet. Although Carpenter indirectly confessed to the murders, they lacked hard evidence. The final piece of the puzzle came from Carpenter's friend, Shane Williams, who led the police to the murder weapon, resulting in Carpenter's arrest. Trial and Aftermath Carpenter was tried twice and maintained his innocence throughout both trials. However, the juries found him guilty of his crimes, and he was sentenced to death in 1988. As of today, he remains on death row at San Quentin Prison, still claiming his innocence. #documentary #crimenews #crimedocumentary #love #crime_news #bhonecrime
